For fourteen years, the Good Shepherd Baptist Church has operated the Amherst Food Pantry, providing help with food to more than 100 homes each week. It also works with Toys for Tots to provide Christmas gifts for children.

Such services provide the tools to maximize their opportunity to survive, obtain physical and mental well being and independence, and minimize the trauma involved in coping with family violence. We endeavor to be part of a collaborative community effort to provide a responsive system of care for victims while also raising awareness.

The Salvation Army has relocated their Amherst Service Unit to Old Stone United Methodist Church.
A service unit is a group of volunteers who represent the Salvation Army in communities where a Salvation Army center for worship and help is not located.
- Meet physical needs of people in the spirit of Christ and by working together with churches and the Christian community.
- Provide emergency assistance with food, utilities, transportation, education, etc. on a temporary basis to help people solve their problems and get on with a better way of life.
- Build public awareness in the community of The Army’s spirit, plan and purpose.
- Implement programs – Summer camps, nursing home visits, back-to-school supplies, Blessings Program, Angel Tree and the Benefit Bank
